TV Stand Fit Calculator

Not sure if your TV will sit properly on a stand? Enter the TV’s size, the spacing between its feet, and the stand’s usable top dimensions. The calculator checks width, depth, overhang, and weight capacity so you can spot a mismatch before setting everything up.

To check your TV’s screen dimensions, use our TV Size Calculator. If you're planning where to place your TV, our TV Viewing Distance Calculator can help you estimate a comfortable viewing distance, while the TV Mounting Height Calculator can help you plan the screen’s height.

For the safest fit, use the full body and foot measurements from your exact TV model and check the stand manufacturer’s weight and support requirements.

Quick guide

How to Use the TV Stand Fit Calculator

1. Find the TV’s real dimensions

Check the manual or manufacturer’s product page for the full TV width, the spacing between the feet, and the depth of each foot. Screen size alone is not enough because bezels and foot placement vary by model.

2. Measure the stand’s top

Measure only the flat area that can support the feet. A stand may be listed as 50 inches wide, for example, but a raised edge or curved top can make the usable area smaller.

3. Add weight details if you have them

Enter the TV’s weight and the stand’s maximum load rating when available. If either value is missing, the calculator cannot verify weight capacity, so check the labels or manuals before setup.

4. Review every check

Look at width, foot spacing, depth, and weight separately. If any measurement is close to the limit, recheck it and follow the manufacturer’s instructions rather than relying on a visual guess.

The math

TV Stand Fit Formula

The calculator uses direct measurement comparisons. It does not guess the stand’s strength or the TV’s exact footprint from diagonal screen size.

CheckCalculationWhat it tells you
Side clearance(Stand top width − TV body width) ÷ 2Positive clearance means the TV body is narrower than the stand top.
Foot width fitTV outside foot spacing ≤ usable stand top widthChecks whether the span between the feet fits across the top.
Foot depth fitTV foot depth ≤ usable stand top depthChecks whether the feet fit front to back.
Weight capacityTV weight ≤ stand maximum loadChecks the entered weight against the stated stand rating.

Important: These checks are a planning aid, not a safety certification. A stand can pass the size checks and still be unsuitable if the top is weak, uneven, damaged, or not approved for your TV.

Approximate Width of Common TV Sizes

These are screen-only estimates for a 16:9 display. The full TV body is usually a little wider.

Estimates use a 16:9 screen ratio and exclude the bezel, rear housing, and feet.

Common questions

TV Stand Fit FAQs

A typical 16:9 55-inch screen is about 47.9 inches wide before adding the bezel. The full TV body may be wider, so check the manufacturer’s dimensions before buying a stand.

A stand that is wider than the TV usually gives the setup a more balanced look and more room for accessories. The important safety check is whether both TV feet or the center pedestal are fully supported by the stand.

Measure the distance between the outside edges of the feet, then compare it with the stand’s usable top width. Also check each foot’s depth and whether the stand top is flat and strong enough for the TV.

The TV body can extend past the sides of a stand only if the TV manufacturer allows that setup and the feet remain fully supported. Do not assume overhang is safe just because the TV balances when still.

TV width is the overall width of the television body. Foot spacing is the distance between the left and right support feet. A TV can be wider than the stand while its feet still fit, but the stand must safely support the TV and meet the manufacturer’s requirements.

The screen-only estimate uses the diagonal and aspect ratio. For a real fit check, enter the TV’s full body width from its specifications, because bezels and cabinet design vary by model.

The usable top depth must support the full footprint of the TV feet or pedestal. Measure the feet from front to back and compare that with the flat, usable surface, not the stand’s overall depth if the top has a lip or raised edge.

This tool is designed for TVs sitting on a stand. If your TV will be wall-mounted, check the wall mount’s VESA pattern, weight rating, and installation instructions instead.

A stand can have enough surface area and still be unsafe if it is not rated for the TV’s weight. Check the stand’s maximum supported load and the TV’s weight without its stand.

Look up the exact model number in the manufacturer’s manual or product specifications. If the feet can be installed in more than one position, check the dimensions for the position you plan to use.
