Compare Screen Sizes

Comparing two screens is easier when you can see the actual difference in width, height and display area. Enter the size of each screen and this tool will work out the numbers for you. If you only need to calculate dimensions for a single display, try our Screen Size Calculator.

You can compare TVs, monitors, laptops, projector screens, or any other display. Use different aspect ratios when needed to see how the shape of the screen changes the result.

The formula

How Screen Size Is Calculated

A screen's diagonal is the distance from one corner to the opposite corner. The aspect ratio tells us how the width and height are related.

Width = Diagonal × Ratio Width ÷ √(Ratio Width² + Ratio Height²)

Height = Diagonal × Ratio Height ÷ √(Ratio Width² + Ratio Height²)

Display Area = Width × Height

For example, a 55-inch screen with a 16:9 ratio uses 16 for the width part and 9 for the height part of the calculation. The same method works for other standard or custom aspect ratios.

How it works

How to Compare Screen Sizes

Enter the diagonal size and aspect ratio for both screens. The tool calculates the width, height and display area so you can see the difference clearly.

Diagonal size is useful for a quick comparison, but width and height matter when you are checking whether a display will fit on a desk, wall or TV stand.

If the screens have different aspect ratios, compare their actual dimensions and display area as well. The shape of a screen can make a noticeable difference.

Quick checks

Things to Check When Comparing Screens

A few measurements can make a screen size comparison much easier.

Width

Check the horizontal space the display will take up on a desk, wall or stand.

Height

Height matters when you have limited vertical space or a fixed mounting area.

Display Area

Area shows how much physical screen surface each display has.

Aspect Ratio

The ratio changes the shape of the screen, even when the diagonal is the same.

Common questions

Screen Size Comparison FAQ

Quick answers to common questions about comparing display sizes.

How do I compare two screen sizes?

Enter the diagonal size and aspect ratio for both screens, then click Calculate Screen Size. The tool shows their calculated width, height and display area.

Can two screens with the same diagonal size have different dimensions?

Yes. The aspect ratio affects the width and height of a screen, so two screens with the same diagonal can have different dimensions.

Which is more useful when comparing screens, diagonal size or display area?

Both are useful. Diagonal size is the common way displays are advertised, while display area shows how much physical screen surface each display has.

Can I compare screens with different aspect ratios?

Yes. Enter the aspect ratio for each screen. The comparison uses the selected ratio when calculating width, height and display area.
