TV dimensions

TV Size Calculator

A TV's advertised size is its diagonal measurement, not its full width. Use this calculator to find the actual screen width and height of a 16:9 TV, then estimate how much space the TV body will take with the frame included. For more screen measurements, try our Screen Size Calculator or compare two displays with our Screen Size Comparison.

Screen measurements

TVs are normally advertised by diagonal screen size.

The frame setting is an estimate. For exact outside dimensions, always check the manufacturer's specifications for your TV model.

How it works

How to Use the TV Size Calculator

Start with the diagonal size printed on the TV box or product listing. Enter that number and choose inches or centimeters. The calculator uses a 16:9 aspect ratio, which is the standard shape used by modern widescreen TVs.

Next, choose a frame setting. Slim uses a 5 mm bezel on each side, while Thick uses 20 mm on each side. Choose Custom if you have a better estimate for the TV you are checking.

The result gives you two useful measurements. Screen dimensions tell you the size of the visible display, while total frame size gives you an estimate of the outside width and height of the TV body. This makes the result more useful when you are checking a TV stand, cabinet, wall space, or entertainment unit.

If you are planning a real installation, leave some extra room around the TV and confirm the exact dimensions in the manufacturer's specification sheet.

The formula

How TV Screen Size Is Calculated

A TV's diagonal is the distance from one corner of the visible screen to the opposite corner. Because the TV uses a 16:9 aspect ratio, the diagonal can be converted into the screen's width and height using the Pythagorean relationship.

Screen Width = Diagonal × 16 ÷ √(16² + 9²)

Screen Height = Diagonal × 9 ÷ √(16² + 9²)

Total Frame Width = Screen Width + (2 × Bezel)

Total Frame Height = Screen Height + (2 × Bezel)

For example, a 55-inch TV has a calculated screen width of about 47.94 inches and a screen height of about 26.97 inches. If the bezel is 5 mm on each side, the estimated outside frame becomes slightly wider and taller because the bezel is added on both sides.

Worked example

55-Inch TV Dimensions Example

A quick example shows why the advertised diagonal is different from the TV's actual width.

Measurement Approximate result
Diagonal 55 in (139.70 cm)
Screen width 47.94 in (121.77 cm)
Screen height 26.97 in (68.50 cm)
Estimated frame with 5 mm bezel per side 48.33 × 27.36 in (122.76 × 69.50 cm)

The last line is an estimate rather than a model specification. A real 55-inch TV can be a little wider or narrower because manufacturers use different frame designs and body shapes.

Planning a TV

What to Check Before Buying a TV

Screen size is only one part of the measurement you need when checking a TV for your room.

TV Width

Compare the estimated outside width with the usable space on your TV stand, cabinet, or wall.

TV Height

Check the available vertical space, especially if the TV will sit inside a cabinet or below a shelf.

Frame Size

The visible screen is smaller than the complete TV body because the frame adds extra width and height.

Exact Model

Use the manufacturer's dimensions before buying or mounting a TV because frame designs vary by model.

Common questions

TV Size Calculator FAQ

Simple answers to common questions about TV dimensions, screen size, and bezel measurements.

How does the TV size calculator work?

Enter the TV diagonal size, choose the unit, and keep the 16:9 aspect ratio. The calculator works out the screen width and height, then adds the selected bezel thickness to estimate the total outside frame size.

Does a 55-inch TV measure 55 inches wide?

No. A 55-inch TV refers to the diagonal of the screen, measured from one corner to the opposite corner. For a 16:9 display, the screen itself is about 47.94 inches wide and 26.97 inches high before the bezel is added.

What is the actual width of a 55-inch TV?

For a 55-inch 16:9 screen, the calculated display width is about 47.94 inches (121.77 cm). The outside width will be slightly larger because the TV frame adds space around the display.

What is the height of a 55-inch TV?

A 55-inch 16:9 display has a calculated screen height of about 26.97 inches (68.50 cm). The full TV body can be taller depending on its bezel and physical design.

Does the calculator include the TV bezel?

Yes. The screen width and height are calculated first, then the selected bezel thickness is added to both sides and both top and bottom edges to estimate the total frame size.

What bezel thickness should I choose?

Use Slim for a narrow modern frame, Thick for a more noticeable frame, or Custom when you know the approximate bezel thickness of a particular TV. These are estimates, not manufacturer specifications.

Is bezel thickness added once or twice?

It is added twice for each dimension because the bezel sits on both sides. Total width is screen width plus two bezel widths, and total height is screen height plus two bezel heights.

Can I enter the TV size in centimeters?

Yes. Enter the diagonal in centimeters and select cm. The calculator converts the value internally and shows the result in both inches and centimeters.

Can I use this calculator for 32, 43, 50, 55, 65, or 75 inch TVs?

Yes. You can enter any positive diagonal size, including common TV sizes such as 32, 43, 50, 55, 65, and 75 inches.

Does the total frame size include the TV stand?

No. The total frame size is the estimated width and height of the TV body including the bezel. It does not include legs, a center stand, wall mount hardware, cables, or extra clearance.

Are TV dimensions exactly the same for every TV with the same screen size?

No. Two TVs with the same diagonal can have different outside dimensions because their bezels and body designs are different. The calculator estimates the frame from the bezel thickness you select.

How accurate is the TV frame size estimate?

The screen dimensions are mathematically calculated from the diagonal and 16:9 ratio. The total frame size is an estimate because real TV frames vary by model and can include rounded edges or other body parts.

Will a 55-inch TV fit on my TV stand?

Compare the calculator’s total frame width with the usable width of your stand. Also check the manufacturer’s specifications because the actual outside width can differ from an estimate, and make sure the stand supports the TV safely.

Can I use the result to plan a wall space?

Yes, as a quick planning estimate. Use the total frame width and height to understand the space the TV body may occupy, then allow extra room for mounting hardware, cables, ventilation, and the exact TV model.

What is the difference between screen size and TV size?

Screen size normally means the diagonal measurement of the visible display. TV size in a room-planning context can mean the complete outside dimensions, which include the frame around the screen.

What aspect ratio does the TV size calculator use?

The calculator uses the standard 16:9 aspect ratio for modern widescreen TVs. That ratio is used to convert the diagonal measurement into the visible screen width and height.
